Function Meets Beauty: A Mudroom And Laundry for Real Life
I think every home deserves a hardworking space that doesn’t sacrifice beauty for function, and this mudroom + laundry does exactly that. From the moment you walk in, the design balances practicality with a sense of calm.
Every project needs a starting point, and for this one, these two spaces were it. From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to introduce checkerboard flooring here- it’s a timeless, traditional element that I knew would ground the design while still feeling fresh. My clients wanted their home to feel warm and welcoming, open and airy, but they also loved the idea of weaving in touches of color. This space became the jumping-off point for the entire project, setting the tone for the mood I wanted to carry throughout the house: classic yet approachable, rooted in tradition but full of lightness and ease.
I selected cabinetry in a soft white to keep the space feeling bright and airy, along with beadboard for dimension and subtle texture, and a gentle botanical wallpaper for even more softness and visual interest. There’s a place for everything in this small, but hardworking space- from shoes and coats to cleaning supplies or laundry baskets.
A Spot to Pause
One of my favorite details in these spaces is the built-in bench. Not only does it provide a comfortable spot to slip shoes on and off, but it also provides a spot to tuck away extra items. I love adding a touch of personality any chance that I can, even in the most functional spaces. Layering a few pillows in muted greens allowed me to add even more texture and softness without overwhelming, and a custom Roman shade brings in a tailored detail, a simple touch that always elevates a design. I brought in a woven basket, not only for storage and tucking away clutter, but also to add a dose of tension, warmth and texture.
Seamless Flow Into the Laundry
Just beyond, the laundry room continues the same theme- fresh, simple, and elegant. The checkerboard flooring ties the two spaces together while adding a playful nod to classic design. Streamlined countertops and cabinets offer plenty of folding space and hidden storage, while natural light floods the room, making laundry (almost!) enjoyable. A tall vase of branches provides a sculptural focal point, proof that even the most utilitarian spaces deserve something beautiful.
Rooted in Beauty, Designed for Living
What makes this space work is the balance between utility and aesthetics. Every inch is designed with intention, but it still feels welcoming and lived-in. It’s proof that even the most functional areas of a home can (and should) be beautiful.
