A Bedroom & Bath Retreat, for the Kindest People (Part Two)

If you missed Part One, this home’s kitchen was the first stop on a design journey with the most wonderful family who makes you feel instantly at ease — the kind of people who somehow make even a quick project meeting feel like catching up with old friends. Today, we’re stepping through the door of the primary suite: a restful, layered space that feels like an exhale.

A Bedroom That Whispers

My intention in the primary suite was to create a calm sanctuary, perfect for slowing down. The headboard is upholstered— soft to the touch and soothing on the eyes— the kind of piece that almost begs for breakfast in bed (or at the very least, a few chapters of a good book before anyone starts asking what’s for dinner).

We leaned into natural wood tones for the dresser and nightstands— pieces with presence, but not flash. They bring a grounded richness to the room that plays beautifully against the lighter palette. A pair of hefty table lamps add tension and just the right glow, while floral accents add dimension and texture.

Above the bed, a landscape painting anchors the space- quiet and nostalgic, almost like it was plucked from a beloved attic collection. It’s not trying to be the star of the show, but rather, to tell a bit of a story. And that’s really the spirit of this whole room.

We carved out a cozy sitting area, perfect for curling up with morning coffee, or ignoring your phone with the dog in your lap— whichever comes first. It’s a corner meant to be lived in, not just looked at.

A Bathroom That Balances

In the bathroom, we took our cue from contrast — marrying black finishes my client had already installed, with softer layers. The marble sings (as marble tends to do), and we gave it a harmonious partner in polished nickel fixtures, which catch the light without demanding attention. It’s a little bit of tension, and a lot of calm.

Accessories were chosen carefully — the kind of details you don’t notice right away, but miss when they’re gone. A vase here, a vintage-inspired tray there. Enough to make the space feel considered, but never crowded.

The Feel of a Hug

This entire suite was designed to feel like a retreat from the world — not in a grand, five-star-hotel kind of way, but in that understated, this-is-my-favorite-place-to-land kind of way.

Soft, layered, a little storied. The kind of space where nothing is trying too hard. And just like the family who lives here — warm, gracious, and quietly wonderful.
